River Cruise Birding
The side by side existence of a fresh and saltwater ecosystem, densely vegetated river banks and flood plains, wide open savanna grasslands and thick palm forests provide habitat for an incredible variety of bird species. With no recorded or documented account of all the species available in the area, resident or migratory, this remains another exiting attraction for many adventurous bird-watching enthusiasts.
African fish eagle, palmnut vulture, osprey, herons, turns, gulls, pelicans, cormorants, teals, egrets, storks, African jacana, plovers, guineafowl, francolins, variety of eagles and hawks, barbets, louries, kingfishers, bee-eaters, larks, thrushes, tits, weavers and canaries have all been sited in the area.

Day excursions
Several day excursions are available from the lodge and include activities such as; visits to some of the traditional fishing villages, river cruises, sundowner cruises, crocodile spotting, photography, guided walking trails and sea turtle tracking ( in season only ).

Relaxing
Being the most underrated activity of all, Camp Rio Longa offers our guests an unique location removed from any modern day pressure; isolated in absolute tranquility to just kick back and have their minds, bodies and spirits healed and rejuvenated by those special remedies only paradise can provide.

Turtle Project
Four, possibly five species of sea turtles use the beach at Camp Rio Longa for nesting. The role of West African beaches in global turtle ecology is unclear, but given the near extinction of the turtles in the Pacific, it could be of paramount importance in the survival of various turtle species.
Camp Rio Longa started a Turtle Conservation Project in 2001 which involves the local community. Nesting ecology, hatching success and mortality factors at the nesting sites will be determined along with the tagging of as many adults as possible. It is hoped that with time, the project will highlight the relationship of the Atlantic turtles to the global turtle population. At Camp Rio Longa, a high emphasis is placed on conservation training of the community. Read about various species of turtles >>>
