When are the best times to fish? |
| Rio Longa has
been operational since December 2002 and all fishing information herein
contained has been acquired since that time. The Angolan summer season
runs from September to then end of April and with the summer comes
the warm guinea current from the north wedging itself along the coast
line and pushing the cold benguela current south and vice versa when
the change from summer to winter occurs. |
| |
| Angola has a summer rainfall, directly at the
lodge minimum rainfalls have been recorded. However further inland
highlands receive large amounts of rainfall,
which then is drained into the Longa River creating a swelled, fresh
water and fast flowing river. This factor often causes problems with
surf fishing at the mouth due the weed and debris being pushed out
to sea but has no real effect on the fishing at sea and is actually
beneficial when targeting large tarpon due the “tea colour” of
the water giving them a medium in which to hunt. |
| |
| When the river is at its peak capacity no salt water enters the river
at any time. This velocity gradually slows down in winter as the rains
subside until salt water is able to enter into the mouth up to half
a kilometer inwards on high or spring high tides enabling salt water
fish to enter the river to hunt for baitfish. Cubera snapper, giant
threadfin, large cob and the occasional spotted grunter have been caught. |
| |
| We have found that neap tides are better than
the springs, mainly because of the generally calm conditions. The reason
for this is that the surf at Rio Longa is mostly a beach break which
pounds when big making fishing sometimes impossible unless a hole can
be found. Fishing at sea is also affected because of the roughness
of the mouth. |
| |
| When to visit Rio
Longa? The answer very much
depends on what kind of fishing the guest plans to do and more so,
what species he/she would like to pursue. In order for the angler to
choose the most suitable time his particular interest we have broken
down the information by species and the best
times for each. |
