All visitors to Angola need a visa to enter the country. In order to apply for a visa the prospective visitors needs a “Letter of Invite” written in Portuguese from the party to be visited in Angola. Letters of invite will be supplied to all guests upon confirmation of their booking. The visa application process takes approximately 4 weeks. When flying into Luanda, visitors should provide proof of Yellow Fever inoculation by ways of a valid “Yellow card”. Failure to present a “Yellow Card” could result in entry being denied or visitors could be liable to a fine of up to US$ 100.

Camp Rio Longa has a tropical climate and due to its proximity to water, mosquitoes can be a problem. Malaria precautions are advisable. Although the water from the river is clean, it is only used for washing and showers; bottled water is supplied for drinking.

Climate
Western Angola has a moderate climate and although temperatures in summer rarely raises above 35’C, the humidity is very high. During the night temperatures normally cools down to a comfortable 20’C. Winter temperatures are moderate with daytime temperatures around 25’C dropping to about 12’C at night. The raining season normally starts around February and will last until June.

What to take?
Clothing and personal items. It is recommended to pack light cotton clothing, with a windbreaker for cool evenings and mornings. Long sleeves and trousers are recommended after dark to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Comfortable sandals make for easy removing when getting in and out of the boats and should be allowed to get wet. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential items to pack as well as mosquito repellent and personal medication.
Camera and plenty of film is a must.

Fishing Tackle. Fishing Tackle at the lodge consists of surfcasting gear, 12-foot graphite rods and some boat fishing gear. Although reels are available, we recommend anglers to take their own reels and a variety of lures for casting and trolling. Included in the rates are the usage of any of the lodge tackle and supply of basic terminal tackle like hooks, sinkers, leaders, etc. Proven lures will be stocked at the lodge, but anglers will be expected to pay for lost lures at cost. Light tackle and fly-fishing equipment are not supplied and anglers should bring their own.

Insurance. Visitors are recommended to take out personal travel insurance or check that their personal insurance allows for visits to Angola.
Money. For payments at the lodge and any purchases within Angola, it is recommended to take along some US dollars in cash and in small denominations.
